Fincantieri – Palermo Shipyard

The Palermo shipyard, founded in 1897 by Ignazio Florio, is a symbol of Italy’s industrial history and shipbuilding tradition in the Mediterranean. Today an integral part of the Fincantieri S.p.A. group, the Sicilian site continues to be a focal point for shipbuilding, conversion and maintenance activities, as well as for the construction of offshore platforms and large floating works.

In 2023, Quantum was asked to contribute to the modernisation and energy efficiency of the site, in line with the environmental sustainability strategy pursued by the Group. The intervention concerned two large production areas of the plant, for which a complete redevelopment of the industrial lighting system was designed and implemented.

The initial state of the installation involved mixed technology luminaires, mainly metal halide and halide projectors, which are now outdated in terms of efficiency and maintenance. The objective was twofold: to optimise energy consumption and ensure optimal visual comfort for the complex and high-precision production activities that take place on the site on a daily basis.

After a thorough analysis of installation heights, environmental conditions and the specific needs of the departments involved, the Quantum team designed a tailor-made lighting system based on 277 new high-efficiency LED luminaires, replacing the previous 429 lighting points. The drastic reduction in the number of luminaires, with the same performance (indeed, an improvement in light quality), testifies to the effectiveness of the new system.

The project was developed and realised in full compliance with the UNI EN 12464-1:2021 standard, which defines lighting requirements for indoor work environments, with particular attention to illuminance values, uniformity and glare control.

The end result was a high performance: a 67% energy saving, achieved without compromising on safety, operational efficiency and light quality.
