Vetrobalsamo – Illuminating at height and making the most of natural light
Vetrobalsamo S.p.A., a historic Italian company specialising in the production of glass containers for the food and pharmaceutical sectors, embarked in 2017 on a major energy-efficiency project that involved the entire industrial lighting system of its production site in Sesto San Giovanni, on the outskirts of Milan.
With a production of more than half a million bottles per day, Vetrobalsamo has set itself very clear objectives: to drastically reduce energy consumption, to increase the reliability and quality of lighting and, last but not least, to concretely lower the CO₂ emissions associated with the operation of the plant.
From the earliest stages of the technical survey, Quantum highlighted two main critical issues:
- High installation quotas required the use of high-performance luminaires with dedicated optics to ensure light uniformity and no shadow zones.
- Natural light is provided by translucent and zenithal surfaces, to be integrated and optimised with artificial light in order to avoid energy wastage and uneven illuminance.
The design response was the installation of 190 high output LED luminaires, selected to operate effectively in production environments with great heights. All the devices were integrated with an intelligent management system capable of modulating the flow according to the presence of natural light, detecting any anomalies and providing detailed reports in real time.
The result? A certified energy saving of 74%, accompanied by an improvement in visibility, safety and well-being conditions for all personnel. The intervention has also strengthened Vetrobalsamo’s position as a company attentive to environmental sustainability and technological innovation, transforming lighting from an operating cost into a strategic resource for efficiency and industrial competitiveness.
