Repsol – Petrol Stations

In 2009, Repsol, one of the leading global players in the energy and fuel sector, launched the Edison Plan, an ambitious programme to upgrade the energy efficiency of its 3,600 service stations. The objective is twofold: to optimise operational efficiency and reduce environmental emissions, in line with the group’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Edison’s plan is divided into seven strategic pillars, including the reduction of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, a central theme in Repsol’s development roadmap for the five-year period 2012-2016.

In 2014, Quantum was selected to develop a pilot project in Italy, with the aim of testing a scalable corporate-wide solution capable of supporting and enhancing the objectives of Edison’s plan through the adoption of an intelligent platform for the energy management of service stations.

The intervention focuses on a service station located in the province of Vicenza, chosen as a case study. The challenge is complex: to create a system capable not only of reducing energy consumption, but also of automating the control of utilities (dispensers, car wash, ancillary services) and integrating the lighting system into the network, thus opening the way to new forms of communication and dynamic marketing based on programmable lighting scenarios.

Quantum’s solution, QLight™, is an integrated digital platform that combines energy efficiency, intelligent flow management and centralised supervision in a single infrastructure. The system is governed by ‘Petrol Internet of Things‘ software, developed by Quantum for the fuel distribution industry.

The plant went into operation in December 2014, and from the very first months of operation it exceeded design expectations: monitoring data showed a 78% reduction in consumption compared to the initial situation. An extraordinary figure that represents not only an immediate economic saving, but also a direct and measurable contribution to reducing emissions into the atmosphere.

In addition to the energy benefits, the system enables Repsol to acquire valuable information in real time for the management and optimisation of station services: a strategic value that allows for more precise planning of promotional campaigns, time scheduling of services and analysis of user behaviour, favouring proactive business management.

With this project, Quantum once again demonstrates how the digitisation of lighting and the intelligent control of energy flows can transform existing infrastructures into smart, efficient and sustainable installations. And Repsol, with this initiative, confirms its commitment to innovate in the name of the environment, technology and responsibility towards the communities it serves.
